I’ve seen lots of lovely Frozen party cakes designs using Rock Candy. The stuff intrigues me. It makes for fantastic shards of ice, icicles and other dramatic features.
Here are a few of my favourite designs from around the web.
Shards of rock candy
Shard of rock candy are used to imply Elsa’s ice palace, or the dangerous uncontrollable power of her curse.
Rock candy sheets
Large, neatly cut, sheets of Rock Candy, used to create a large ice palace.
A large piece of Rock Candy placed flat on top of a cake to create a frozen lake, or skating rink for Elsa and Anna.
Giant rock candy crystals
Here, scattered around a lost Elsa.
Drizzles of rock candy
A more random approach to pouring the molten sugar, creates stunning icicles, swirls and shards of rock candy ice, decorating simple cupcakes.
I love the dramatic impact rock candy can add to the design of a Frozen-themed celebration cake. From simple to elaborate, it adds a touch of glassy class.
Rock candy recipe
In a saucepan, add:
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1.5 tablespoons of corn syrup
- 2 tablespoons of water
Boil on high until it reaches 150*C. Then add:
- 1 drop of blue food colouring
- 1/8 teaspoon of flavouring (i.e. mint, optional)
Pour it out on a silicone mat.
- To make shards pour a large amount out onto the mat
- To make lacy frozen icicles, drizzle smaller amounts as little strings and strands of syrup.
It will lift right up off the mat when cooled.
The larger piece can be broken carefully to make crystals. Be really careful…hard candy can cut like glass.
